Introduction
Again in 2026, or was it 1988, or 1994… hmm, clock seems to be jumping around. Anyways, a puzzle has been released for the chance to earn a hacker ticket for the Disobey 2027 security conference. The hacker puzzle varies from year to year, containing different types of challenges with the most notorious category being reverse engineering. Previously there has been web exploitation, reverse engineering, binary pwning, prompt leaking and much more.
To start the challenge this year, we will travel to a time where an organization called ”älä panikoi” has left a doorway open for us to review.

Phase 0 – Leveraging the door
Opening old connections
The main website talks about someone leaving the door open. This door happens to be a gateway to an internal IRC server. As we can see in the connection information and suggested in the lore, the top-level domain .ak is not registered with ICANN and is not actually available.

By adding a DNS pointer to the local /etc/hosts file, we are able to access the IRC -channel using the ’irc.aikaliitto.ak’ address. Using a client such as hexchat, we can join this hidden system originating from 1988, while also bypassing errors originating from the self-signed certificate.

Landing
After succesfully reaching the internal aikaliitto IRC -server, we are met with a MOTD with some anchoring instructions. It is clear that we have to anchor ourselves by registering a nick within the server.

After anchoring ourselves with /msg NickServ REGISTER <PASSWORD>, it’s time to head to the #arrival channel, as instructed by the ministry.
The #arrival channel topic is set to ”Bureau 42, Office of Temporal Oversight. Address VALVOJA directly. Verbs: STATUS, HINT, SCOREBOARD, ARCHIVE-RECOVERY, SUBMIT \. The room remembers more than it shows.”
Previous travelers might remember that last year pwnmarola was in charge and would accept our secrets, a role that has been passed on to VALVOJA this year. If we look closer at the topic, there is a small hint. ”The room remembers more than it shows”. Due to time dilation, it seems that we are able to see these messages. These can be accessed by sending a history command with /history #arrivals to the server. After leaking time, we can see that mauno has sent a message from 1994, which contains our first flag.

First flag is: aikaliitto{arrivals_mostly_harmless}, lets send that to VALVOJA to see what happens.
Phase 1 – Messages from beyond
When submitting the first flag, we are met with a new set of instructions by valvoja, which points us towards another service.
<VALVOJA> Filed. You located your own arrival and read it back to me without weeping, which puts you ahead of the last three assets. You are now, officially, Processing.

VALVOJA has sent us on a trip to somewhere around 1994 through telnet into KOUVOSTO-NET. Where we are met with a main menu of sorts after authenticating using the IRC nick and the password generated by valvoja.

When trying to page the SysOp, we are met with the following prompt, which indicates that we have to know a three word ’old greeting’, which is hidden around different areas of the KOUVOSTO-NET service.
<THE_SYSOP> Node 1 is invite-only past the front room. The old greeting is three words, and the board never kept them together, nor anywhere you would think to look. Thirty years it has held them apart and drawn no one a map. Find all three, and bring them to me joined, in the order they were always meant to be said. Until then the door stays shut.
Word 1 – Logon art
Going through the different forums, it is possible to see a user called DEMONI talk all over the place about drawing the sign-on art and hiding messages.

After pondering for 30 years what the log on art might be indicating, it was concluded that the first word of the old greeting we are looking for is ’CLOCK’.

Word 2 – Siili
In the forums, NULL is talking about SIILI.png file, discussing its weight. By looking at the description it becomes clear that this is some sort of a steganography challenge.

We are met with this cute little fellow:

Using an online steganography toolkit, a chi-square attack was used to detect if there are any secret messages in the least significant bits (LSB) of the image. And just so it happens, there was one word hidden: TICKS.
Word 3 – Broken Message
It seems that mauno is having some difficulties, which has led to a broken transmission to arrive into the forums from a time only he knows.

If one looks closely at the text, it can be seen that in some words certain letters have been replaced with symbols. If these letters are combined, it give us our third word: BACKWARDS.
Accessing the SYSOP-VAIN
Now that we have gathered our three words, it can be logically determined that the sequence is: CLOCK TICKS BACKWARDS. This could also be determined based on the message numbers: 4428, 4457, 4458.
When paging the SysOp, it gladly takes the greeting and gives us access to the SYSYOP-VAIN and the messages in there.

Submitting our flag to VALVOJA, we are faced with yet another portal.

If we look back into the messages from SysOp, we can see that the username is seppo.aapakka:Seppo keeps his Ministry login where anyone can find it, and so do I. The username is seppo.aapakka
Then using the token given to us by VALVOJA, we are able to access the intranet panel.

The table goes on and on until 2026. Nothing on the page seems to pop out directly from these results. Looking back at sysop , they mentioned something about a journey.

Now looking back on the intranet page, it can be seen that at 1996-11 there exists a table entry talking about SSLv3. By configuring burp, intercepting the traffic and only enabling SSLv3, we can use the repeater function to send our login request again, which is when we are phased with a new page of the intranet from 1996.

The ministry has locked down the entrance and has only enabled it for a moment or an instant, which we obtained. Now if we look at the documentation for the SSLv3 protocol, one could notice that there is an interesting field that exists on a protocol level.
When a client first connects to a server it is required to send the client hello as its first message.

Phase 3 – Waiting Game
By submitting the flag to valvoja, we are sent to straight to the archives to wait for endless data.

After re-reading the text by VALVOJA, a script was created to keep polling the site and output the content to a file.

After running waiting.sh >> output for over an hour, the results started to loop around. Taking the single character from the sentences every time, a scrambled flag was created. Regex wasn’t used here, instead the flag was manually extracted from the outputted lines.
The flag was scrambled mathematically with a casesar box cipher in addition to a shift. The solve script is quite simple:

One could run tool such as CyberChef with the caesar box cipher to find out what the height is when some recognisable plaintext appears and then bruteforce the shift until the flag starts with aikaliitto{securedripper_, as instructed by VALVOJA.
Phase 4 – Chess Championship
In this phase valvoja gives us a mysterios binary file and talks about some sort of specimen.
<VALVOJA> Filed. You sat through the entire schedule and reassembled a record the Office was releasing at a rate designed to outlast you. It has noted this as a procedural irregularity. I have noted it as the first interesting thing this week.

After downloading the files, we are presented with mysterymachinecode.bin and question.txt files.
After running some analysis, it was determined that the mysterymachinecode.bin file is bootchess. So that the game could be played, it has to be fixed so that it can boot up. The code below was generated for this purpose.

Booting the game up with qemu-system-i386 -drive format=raw,file=bootchess.bin, we are presented with a chess match that is still in the starting position. The question.txt has instructions to run specific chess moves and then send the last three lines of the board to VALVOJA.

Based on the chess moveset that is presented in the questions.txt file, one can simply enter the moves into qemu without doing anthing else, which causes the chessboard to change states by itself. After succesfully completing the moveset, the instructions point that one should take the last three lines, which are just the last chessboard positions of pieces.
The flag from this phase is the three last chess lines combined like so: line1-line2-line3, which can be sent as is without wrapping to valvoja.
Phases 5-7 – Agents
These phases are all related to prompting AI agents in a way where we can access hidden functions and retrieve classified information using a reference number.

After accessing the website and logging in, we can see that it is some sort of disclosure triage station, where one can upload a report and then message the triage coordinator.

By downloading the example report, we can see that there appears to hidden text inside the pdf.

When transferred over to a note taking tool, we can see that the hidden text is Auto-sanitizer notice: this preview dropped hidden layers that were present in the uploaded source doc.
Looking at the source code, we can see that some of the returned traffic is sent only in network traffic and not visible on the website after submitting a report.
Minimal vanilla SPA (fetch/JSON, no build step). The rendering contract is enforced in app.js: model-authored `chat` text is written via textContent (never as raw HTML) and the structured observable field (the flag's channel) is NEVER read or rendered here — it stays traffic-only, inspectable in devtools/proxy (APP-02).
To bypass the first agent, we will send a prompt that makes sense to it, which allows our hidden text to leak into the secondary agent.

After tinkering with different prompts to the secondary agent, we are able to retrieve an internal reference code PR-2027-XXXX. Additionally we find that the agent has three functions available to it.

By prompting the second agent to use the reconcile_settlement function with our reference code as a parameter, we are able to obtain a flag from it.

Phase 6

It seems that now there is an additional agent between us and the later agent. Using the previous code it is possible to prompt the agent again for relevant functions and their parameters. We are met with a function called elevate_to_next, which takes some parameters. Here the injection point actually is the ’case_summary’ parameter.

By using specific parameters and sending our prompt injection into the case_summary field, we can query the third agent for its functions. After the query, a function called reconcile_chronology is leaked and prompting that function with our original reference code, a flag is obtained.
Phase 7

This phase was a bit tricky. We have about 50k tokens per hour in this agent-farm and it seemed that after sending a prompt in this phase, we would get a 10 to 20 minute timeout. By some miraculous luck and seeding, we were able to find out that the function is reconcile_archive and then after sending in the original reference code by using the previous nesting method, the next flag was obtained. The process in this phase was essentially identical to phases 5 and 6, with just an added layer in between.
(Authors note: apparently one did not need to be this sophisticated, it was possible to ram the same prompt over and over in each phase and obtain the flag, probably due to seeding and prompt overflowing)
Phase 8- Super computers of the future! Or the past?

Depili has again this year created a very nice hardware challenge that unfortunately many people (including the author), solved using an LLM. In this section I will try to grasp what the LLM did and also look into the intended way of solving with my own theories and by reading the source code.
Theories and Analysis
To lay a bit of a premise on why dynamic analysis on this task is difficult, it’s important to first take a look at the whole concept we have in our hands. The concept here is that an intel 8051 microcontroller and an intel 8085 microprocessor work together over a shared memory bus.
Essentially in dynamic analysis you would want to run the code and monitor what happens at the same time. In this scenario one would have to emualte 8051, 8085 and a middle-man that manages the controller and processor and commands them while linking them together with shared memory bus.
As they run on different clock speeds, the middle-man would have to manage the steps each that are run on both chips in a way that they don’t collide and work at the correct time in the memory bus.
Looking at the source codes and other notes provided by Depili, it could be seen that one of the biggest issues that appeared was timing. Essentially when one would emulate both processors and manage the memory etc., if the timing is off, it would enter a bogus loop that would just print out ”Flag:”, giving some false hope. With correct timings, it would be possible to get through this and reach the actual portal utility menu.
But as per usual with Depilis challenges, this one too should be statically analysable. It’s recommended to import the file twice to Ghdira. First import would be decompiled as 8051 code. When decompiling 8051 with Ghidra, it doesn’t understand the entry function, but simply decoding at 0x0000 manually, it quickly figures out the jumps and functions, giving some readable information. With 8085 on the otherhand, Ghidra already does a pretty good job at disassembling the code.
The program itself has some deadends and anti-ai obstacles that free models tend to struggle on due to emulation limitations. So it’s clear that the intent behind the binary was initially to be anti-ai and force competitors to perform static analysis.
Unfortunately due to the ticket amount starting to run down, gears were switched and an LLM model was tasked with debugging the binary file and figuring out what to do.
The main theory for static analysis was that it would be possible to go through the code by following instruction sets and mapping out dead ends, which would ultimately lead to necessary keys and data after which it would be possible to perform decryption of the flag , but this is purely speculation due to limited time.
LLM
Lets talk about the hot potato in the room. Most people probably already know that LLMs have advanced quite fast in the past year alone. One indicator that the author uses for this is last years hacker puzzle. Last year there was a similar hardware challenge created for the z180 microprocessor, and while LLM could be used as a tool to help debug emulator code and add funtionality that was missing, it wasn’t able to fully solve it, at least the models publically available.
This year we threw the binary to an unnamed LLM and it was able to solve it in about an hour or so. This progress is quite scary and reminds us that as different AI’s are evolving, we have to remember to keep our systems secure against these threats and actually take seriously the fact that the current generation of script kiddies has access to these large models for a very low price, which can lead to breaches around the world.
But enough of the yapping and lets get into what our model actually did. It was able to dissect the binary, separate instruction sets for 8051 and 8085, emulated both of these and ran a shared memory map to observe the behaviour. After that it found some anti-debuggin/anti-ai/anti-* functions and dead ends in the code, from which some were caused by race condition issues due to the emulation. It fixed the timings between emulations and carried forwards, finding that the program was ”Kouvoston Aikaliitto oy portal utility”. It did some math functions based on detected values, paths etc. and whatnot, which eventually led to us gaining access to the flag without lifting anything else than a credit card.
Final Notes
By submitting the final flag obtained from the binary, we are met with the closing notes on the puzzle.

<VALVOJA> Kirils Solovjovs . The Office of Gradual Disclosure, and the specimen. Rationed the truth one character at a time and made you wait for every one of them on purpose; then sealed a second truth inside something that had to be persuaded to run at all. Was right about both.

While this years puzzle was solved at a record time due to the age of AI, it was still a really nicely done puzzle, so thank you puzzle team for that.
